How Long Can Semen DNA Persist?

Studies have shown that semen may be recovered from the vagina for several days following sexual intercourse, and in some circumstances up to around 7 days. By contrast, persistence within the anus is generally much shorter, with reported timeframes typically in the order of 24 - 48 hours.

The persistence of semen and semen DNA within body cavities depends on numerous factors, including the specific anatomical location, washing and hygiene practices, physical activity following the event, environmental conditions, and individual biological variation.

In some circumstances, sperm cells may remain detectable for extended periods, while in others they may degrade or be lost relatively quickly. DNA itself may persist even when intact sperm cells are no longer identifiable.

Forensic findings relating to timing must therefore be interpreted with caution. The detection of semen DNA does not establish when deposition occurred, nor does it necessarily indicate that it relates to the alleged event.
