Preliminary review :
Preliminary DNA Review
A preliminary review provides early, independent forensic input on the DNA evidence before positions become fixed.
The focus is on identifying the true probative value of the DNA findings and whether assumptions or inference may be overstating their significance.
Most preliminary reviews involve 2–4 hours of expert time and commonly assist with questions such as:
- What, if anything, does the DNA evidence actually establish?
- Are there scientific limitations or assumptions that affect weight?
- Does the evidence support the alleged activity, or only presence?
- Are alternative explanations scientifically plausible?
- Is the DNA capable of supporting the prosecution narrative?
- Does the evidence warrant further expert involvement?
This early review is often used to inform plea discussions, trial strategy, and whether an application to challenge or exclude the DNA evidence should be considered.
