How long can DNA stay in the vagina?
DNA can be detected in the vagina even when no sperm cells are present. This may occur in situations involving penile penetration without ejaculation, digital penetration, or transfer of biological material during contact.
In some cases, sperm cells are identified in vaginal samples. In others, only male DNA is detected. The absence of sperm does not mean that no biological material was deposited, and the presence of DNA alone does not indicate the source, timing, or activity that led to its presence.
Research suggests that male DNA in the absence of sperm may persist in the vaginal environment for up to around 24–48 hours, although levels decrease rapidly over time and detection becomes less likely. There is comparatively limited research examining persistence beyond this timeframe.
DNA detected without sperm may originate from skin cells, bodily fluids, or indirect transfer during contact. It may also persist from prior interactions or be influenced by biological processes, washing, and the timing and method of sample collection.
