Australian Institute of Judicial Administration

AIJA Education Program 2024

The AIJA has held regular conferences, seminars, workshops and orations on topics relating to judicial and court administration since 1987. The events held each year are determined by the AIJA Education Committee.

All AIJA events are on topical issues of interest to judicial officers, court administrators, legal practitioners, policy makers, academics and other professionals working in the justice system. They present important opportunities for delegates to discuss key issues of concern to judicial and court administration and to improve the delivery of and access to justice for the community.

(External event) Human Rights Law Trans-Tasman Conference to be held in Queenstown, NZ
12-13 August 2024

Human rights litigation has grown significantly on both sides of the Tasman over the last 10 years or so. Yet, despite the many similarities in our economic, social and legal cultures, reference to case law on the other side of the Tasman is relatively sparse.

This two-day case law conference is designed to enable practitioners on both sides of the Tasman to learn more about each other’s human rights systems and case law in order to enrich each other’s jurisprudence. It will focus on the statutory rights charters (in New Zealand, the ACT, Victoria and Queensland) and on the role of the common law.

The conference will cover some of the big issues of the day on both sides of the Tasman, including the impact of human rights litigation on criminal law and procedure, climate change, indigenous rights, religion and personal liberty.

(External event) Save the Date: The 2024 Jury Research and Practice Conference

The 2024 Jury Research and Practice Conference will be held in the Supreme Court of the ACT on Friday 15 November, following a meeting of the jury managers on Thursday 14 November.

This conference, hosted by the Court of the Future Network, will bring together those with an interest in the jury system in Australia and New Zealand, whether as judges, jury administrators, prosecutors, defence lawyers or victim representatives, as well as those who research jury issues or design jury spaces.

Look out for further details, including registration, soon.
